In 2006, YICT saved three million kWh of electricity and 400,000 sheets of paper; moreover, YICT treated on average 700 cubic metres of waste water every day.
YICT has always taken a conscientious approach to its business operations, complying with the goal of sustainable development of the government. YICT devotes itself to making sure that its ongoing and completed projects are safe and environmentally friendly by analyzing and improving related processes. In various public activities, YICT advocates the public to care about the environmental protection and jointly build an ecological community.
It's our goal to build a green port.
Marine Environment Protection
YICT has installed waste water treatment facilities and has been assisting the relevant government authorities in monitoring ballast water discharge from vessels that call at Yantian.
- Operational and industrial waste water must go through YICT¡¯s waste water treatment facilities.
- Container vessels calling at YICT are not allowed to discharge ballast water without undergoing stringent examinations and obtaining approval from the relevant authorities.
Energy Conservation By implementing various energy saving measures stated below, the demand for power and energy supplies is reduced. Hence, a reduction of the adverse impacts on the environment due to terminal operations is also made possible.
- Electricity consumption of up to two million kWh is saved every year by electrical circuit enhancements of quay cranes.
- By adopting electricity saving technology, 0.4 million kWh has been saved by the container yard lighting system.
- Some 5% to 25% of fuel consumption is reduced through machinery adjustment of gantry cranes.
- Solar power as renewable energy is used in heating and lighting facilities wherever possible.
- Air filters are installed on port equipment to prevent exhaust from exceeding standards.
- In 2006, YICT saved three million kWh of electricity, equivalent to the total consumption of 3,000 households a year.
- New office buildings are installed with the Intelligent Office Automation System (IOAS), enabling YICT to save 80,000 kWh of electricity per year.
- By developing electronic administration and documentation systems, YICT saves more than 400,000 sheets of paper a year (equivalent to 70 ten-year-old trees).
Recycling
- In 2006, approximately 660 tons of scrap metal and 1,800 waste tyres from terminal operations have been collected for recycling purposes.
- Working together with Shenzhen¡¯s environmental protection authorities, YICT has adopted a series of measures to monitor the impact of port construction works on the environment.
Social Engagement
- YICT encourages its staff to actively participate in environmental protection. During and around the annual National Tree Planting Day, YICT organises staff activities for participating in tree planting as well as rubbish clearing.
- In 2006, YICT was presented with an Environmental Protection Certificate from the Shenzhen Pengcheng Waste Reduction Steering Committee for its conscientious efforts to reduce waste and protect the environment.
On-going Efforts
- Set up an environmental protection team in 2006, YICT has incorporated environmental protection concepts and measures into the company¡¯s routine management, and control operational procedures in terms of protecting the environment.
- YICT has formulated its policy on environmental protection with an aim to turn itself into an environmentally friendly port or a green port.
- Upgrading RTGCs
Since 2006, YICT has been upgrading the RTGCs, in which diesel engines are replaced with electrical engines. This technology has substantially reduced the demand for power and energy supplies. Upon upgrading, the RTGCs installed with the electrical engines feauture less loss of power but higher availability of energy.
