As the preferred port of call for super mega container vessels, YICT has received a number of mega-vessel calls since it commenced operations. It is the first one among other container terminals in southern China capable of handling containers at nine tiers high above deck thanks to Post-Panamax quay cranes, the world's leading container handling equipment. Since 2003, YICT has been named "Excellent Container Terminal in China in terms of Quay Crane Rate and Vessel Productivity" for six consecutive years.

On 10 June 2010, the 15,000-TEU Ebba Maersk, one of Maresk's PS-class vessel fleet, carried a full load of containers to YICT for the first time. YICT is the only port of call so far for vessels with such large capacity.
