More than a decade ago, when people came to the Dapeng Bay, what they saw was nothing but sparse human habitation and bare roads. Only the narrow Panshan Road was opened as a passage to the city centre. Nowadays, when people come here again, the previously lacklustre bay has become a port of vitality. The scenes of day and night traffic flow and the glittering lights reveal a beautiful modern city, which has been converted from a fishing village.

People may wonder what caused such a tremendous change. Is it the result of frequent berthing of oceangoing mega-vessels, or continuous shipments of export cargo, or the opening of mountain tunnels and highways? People find the answer when they connect all the changes to the development of a huge modern port. For more than a decade, YICT has not only made a contribution to local economic development in terms of finance, service and human development through excellent management and business performance, but it has also fulfilled civil obligations as an enterprise by constantly organising community activities. Continually excelling ourselves in the role of a port enterprise, we not only serve our customers well, but also contribute to the community and society.

Contribution to Economy
A٩Economic contribution
Since it commenced operations in mid-1994, YICT has recorded double-digit growth of annual container throughput. In 1998, its annual throughput broke one million TEU for the first time, followed by over two million TEU in 2000 and four million TEU in 2002, which have contributed enormously to the total throughput of the port of Shenzhen. In the same year, YICT was awarded "Outstanding Performance Award in Contributing Shenzhen Port to Achieve the Annual Throughput over 7 Million TEU in 2002". In 2005, its annual throughput reached 7.66 million TEU, and was listed in first place in terms of throughput handled by a single terminal in the country. YICT has played an important role in driving the port of Shenzhen to become the world's fourth largest container port.

The development of YICT has not only facilitated the development of the local logistics industry but also the development of related industries such as pilotage, tugboat, Customs clearance, cargo movement, warehousing, free trade zone, trade and processing industries. Since its commencement in 1994, YICT has won numerous awards including "First Place, Top 10 Ports in China", "2005 Best Container Terminal China" and "The Best Global Container Port of the Year 2005-2006". YICT has been singled out by society for its excellent performance and economic contribution.

YICT has been making persistent efforts to improve its service quality, from operational efficiency to technology, to become a world-class container port. In the Third China Freight Industry Awards 2003 organised by China Shipping Gazette, YICT won four titles including "Comprehensive Services - Excellent Container Port", "Transport Network - Excellent Container Port", "High Efficient Operation - Excellent Container Port", and "Up-to-Date Scientific Managing Level - Excellent Container Port". On 21 October 2004, YICT was listed the first on the list of the Top 10 Ports in China and awarded "The Best Container Terminal in China in terms of Efficiency of Handling One Single Vessel" by the Container Branch of the China Port Association.

YICT won the title of "2005 Best Container Terminal China" in the First Annual Cargonews China Awards in Hong Kong on 27 April 2005, and the title of "The Best Global Container Port of the Year 2005-2006" by the Global Institute of Logistics (GIL) in London on 26 October 2005. The latter award is not only the first one GIL has granted to a terminal operator, but also the first global industrial one that a China terminal has ever won.

YICT has become an important part of the global logistics link. It will continue to make a contribution to the development of the Pearl River Delta and South China as a whole.

B٩Job Opportunity
YICT's development and great influence have also created job opportunities in the local region. According to statistics, the number of employees directly involved in Yantian port-related business activities (including terminal employees, employees in port-related industries and officials in governmental organisations which execute supervision and management) amounted to 25 thousand in 2002. Including the number of indirect employees and those deriving from port-related economic activities, the total employment created by Yantian Port was more than 100 thousand, accounting for about 3% of the total employment in Shenzhen.

Local Traffic
Since YICT commenced operations in mid-1994, the company has seen rapid development in the infrastructure around the port, increasing from just one road and one tunnel to four roads, four tunnels and one interchange. In other words, daily road traffic capacity has gone from 25,000 to 275,000 passenger car units (PCU). The RMB 240 million Mingzhu Interchange, jointly invested by YPG and YICT and opened to traffic in December 2003, connects Dameisha and Xiaomeisha in the east, YICT in the south, and inland depots in the north. The Mingzhu Interchange serves to connect the port with the hinterland, and greatly facilitates the connection between regional traffic and provincial highways.

The Second Access to Yantian is an important passageway connecting YICT with the urban area. To minimise any impact on port traffic during construction, YICT has worked with the relevant parties to prepare a traffic plan including:

1. Building a special road bypassing the northern section of Yantian Port Free Trade Zone and connecting to Yanpai Highway. This will allow traffic to be diverted to the east and north via the special road and then onto the Yanpai Highway.

2. Building a special road to connect Yantian West Port, allowing port traffic to bypass the construction site, then to divert via Shenyan Road.

3. Devising a port traffic emergency plan, diverting port traffic via alternative access routes in case of emergency.

Both the Shenzhen Municipal Government and YICT have invested over five billion RMB in the construction of a road network, including those already constructed and still under construction, around the port during the period from 1987 to 2005. The accumulated length of roads around the port is over 80 km. The government will further inject close to 4 billion RMB in road construction during 2006 -2007, with the length of new roads totalling an additional 30 km. The new infrastructure will not only meet the demands of the ever-increasing growth of the port, but also facilitate development of a local traffic network.

Open Day
YICT launched its first open day on 20 October 2001 to receive public visits, helping the local community know more about terminal operations. On 26 October 2002, YICT opened its door to its first visit of over 60 students and teachers from the Affiliated High School of Normal College, Shenzhen University. The students enthusiastically explored the Exhibition Room and the Control Tower. Later, they boarded the pleasure-boat, "Southern Pearl", to better appreciate the busy but well-organised terminals. By means of the tour and the interactive and detailed presentations, the students gained a greater appreciation of the scale of a modern container terminal and the power of modern technology, as well as brand new experience beyond books. From 2001, YICT has handled visits from numerous educational organisations including Shatoujiao High School and Shenzhen University. The Open Day activity is one of the approaches YICT takes to make its contribution to society.

In addition to the Open Day, the daily visits from all over the world to YICT also include numerous groups of students. YICT received about 50 student visits, a total of over 1600 students, from January to August 2005 alone. That is, more than 200 students each month on average. YICT has become an important platform for students to learn about business practice carried out in an enterprise and port industry.

Commonweal Activities
A٩Hope Primary School
In May 2006, YICT staff representatives visited Shilin, Yunan. This is the fifth visit of the company. In order to support education and provide the children in mountainous areas with educational opportunities, YICT set up a "Hope Primary School Support Team" to sponsor the education of Yunan Dahai Hope Primary School. YICT arranges visits to Dahaizi every spring and autumn to extend our care and love to the children there.

Located in a mountainous area of Shilin, Yunan Dahai Hope Primary School has about 200 students. YICT has donated more than RMB200,000 to the school in construction and reconstruction of teaching buildings, dormitories for teachers and students, and toilets. YICT has also conducted a series of support measures: in terms of teaching, training, scholarship, material donation and cultural exchange.

B٩Donation
In June 2003, YICT staff voluntarily donated over RMB100,000 to an employee of a subcontractor, whose son was suffering from leukemia. The Staff Welfare Fund of YICT also set up a special fund to support the kid to have a bone marrow transplant operation.

In June 2005, Guangdong Province experienced a heavy deluge and flood. To help relieve the disaster, YICT actively took part in the contribution organised by the Shenzhen government, and donated nearly RMB40,000 within a week, sending timely relief to the disaster areas. In July 2006, Guangdong province suffered tremendous losses from heavy rain due to Typhoon Bilis. With the donation of RMB three million, YICT indicates our resolve to assist the people in the disaster areas to get through their troubles. Moreover, YICT staff voluntarily donated close to RMB50,000 as well.

Environmental Protection
A٩Marine Protection
The number of vessels berthing at YICT is continually increasing with the growth of shipment trade volume. As part of environment protection, YICT has taken measures to protect the off-shore sea area and minimise as far as possible the side-effects of the production on the environment. Ballasting water is infused into a vessel for gravity stabilisation during a voyage. The ballast water discharge of vessels berthing at YICT has to undergo a strict process of examination and approval. Firstly, it is necessary to apply to the Yantian Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau (Yantian Inspection and Quarantine) for pre-declaration. The Bureau will confirm the sources of ballast water and waste treatment, and then determine whether the ballast water is permitted to be discharged directly or after disinfection. Oily waste water is strictly forbidden to be discharged into the port basin. Even domestic sewage is not permitted to be discharged unless it undergoes special sewage treatment and meets the standards set in the "Effluent Standard for Pollutants from Ship" by the state government.

B٩Water and Atmosphere Protection
Air filters have been installed in the port equipment at YICT, including air filtration cores, petrol filtration cores, motor oil filtration cores to fully prevent the over-discharge of exhaust gas.

YICT has set up environment monitoring check-points around the port with the governmental environment bureau in order to record the changes of atmosphere, water and sound at any time.

The living sewage and industrial waste water in the port is discharged only after special waste water treatment.

C٩Garbage Disposal
Since oceangoing vessels are usually at sea for more than 10 days, how do you dispose of their different waste products?  If it is general waste, the professional cleansing service company will carry out different treatments through packing and disinfection for different types of waste. If the vessel has even once passed through an epidemic area, the waste will have to be disinfected or burnt before treatment.

D٩Electric Power Saving
In consideration of the large quantity of terminal equipment and the large demand for electric power, YICT has made an effort to improve the terminal operational process and reduce power consumption in production, office and living. For instance, turning off lights when not in use, controlling the air-conditioning temperature and power consumption. Through process renovation, the total annual electric power consumption at YICT has been reduced to 3 million kwh.

E٩Greening Shenzhen, Our Home
In Shenzhen International Garden and Flower Expo Park and on Bijiashan Mountain stand rows of trees, many of which were planted by the YICT staff over the past years. Living in Shenzhen, such a beautiful seashore city, every resident hopes it is covered with trees all year long. YICT too shares this desire and actually makes it a reality. In March 2006, employees of YICT planted trees at Shenzhen Central Park to green the city.
