YICT holds SOLAS VGM customer sharing session.

On 20 and 25 May 2016, YICT organised two customer sharing sessions to introduce the new Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) convention regulations, targeting customers from ocean carriers and end-users, respectively.

The International Maritime Organization’s amendments to the SOLAS convention require that the weight of every packed export container be verified before loading, effective 1 July 2016. All shippers must comply with this requirement by providing both the carrier and container terminal operator with verified gross mass (VGM) information before the cargo is loaded. As part of Hutchison Port Holdings Limited’s global network of port and logistics operations, YICT will be ready for full compliance with the new amendments.

The 20 May event attracted about 120 attendees from shipping lines, and that on 25 May drew over 200 terminal end-user participants.Representatives from the Maritime Bureau and other government organisations also attended the two events.

YICT representatives briefed those in attendance on the issues related to the new requirements, including operational processes, data transmission and supporting facilities. During the Q&A session that followed, the shippers’ concerns were addressed and ideas were exchanged.
