Over the past decade, YANTIAN's throughput has risen by 27%, while carbon emissions per container have decreased by 25%. How did such a green port achievement come about? In the program Silk Road Story, Thomas Karlsson, the Silk Road interviewer and professor of Beijing Union University visited YANTIAN to find out the answer.

On June 15, 2023, Shenzhen Port of China and the Port of Gothenburg of Sweden became sister ports. The goal of this agreement is to strengthen cooperation between the two ports in sustainable transportation, cargo volume growth, and technology innovation, and to establish a green shipping corridor, making contributions to the green and low-carbon transformation of the world. This story of friendly exchanges between China and Sweden in the era of the Age of Exploration continues today.

YANTIAN has always been committed to green port development. As early as 2007, all RTGCs at YANTIAN were powered by electricity instead of diesel, significantly reducing diesel consumption. The year 2010 saw the large-scale application of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tractors at YANTIAN, the first terminal in China to widely use LNG tractors, and in 2015, YANTIAN began to use the shore to ship power system. Over the past 10 years, the terminal's throughput has risen by 27%, but our carbon emissions per container have decreased by 25%. We have also won the "Best Green Container Terminal" Award three times in four years.

After the visit, Prof. Thomas Karlsson spoke highly of the port, "YANTIAN's green port construction model is the epitome of the development of Shenzhen Port and even the port and shipping industry across China, which is also a new model to be explored with international partners in the future. In addition, the green shipping corridor between Shenzhen Port and the Port of Gothenburg will also serve as a typical example of Sino-Swedish cooperation and a new link for economic and trade exchanges with Europe."
