On July 5, China's first methanol dual-fuel container vessel, the “COSCO Shipping Yangpu”, made its maiden call at YANTIAN in Shenzhen. This green giant has achieved three industry firsts: it marks the first order placed by a domestic shipowner, the first delivery by a domestic shipyard, and the first real-vessel application of a domestically produced methanol main engine. This milestone underscores China's progress in green shipping technologies and heralds a new chapter of comprehensive low-carbon cooperation between YANTIAN and its partners.
Pioneering Carbon Reduction Technologies, YANTIAN Safeguards the Green Giant
With a length of 366 meters and a capacity of 16,000 TEUs, the “COSCO Shipping Yangpu” has set multiple benchmarks in green and low-carbon performance, with cutting-edge technological innovations integrated across the entire industry chain:
♻️By adopting a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system, the vessel reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 120,000 tons annually compared to traditional diesel-powered ships, equivalent to the carbon sequestration effect of planting 6.7 million trees.
📊It supports enterprises in enhancing their ESG ratings through the provision of carbon footprint traceability reports.
💻Equipped with an Advanced Central Management System (ACMS), the vessel enhances operational efficiency while supporting global supply chain stability, contributing "China's wisdom" to the green and low-carbon transformation of the global shipping industry.
· Coordinated Scheduling Drives Operational Efficiency
YANTIAN precisely aligned berth and equipment resources with the vessel profile and operational needs of “COSCO Shipping Yangpu”. By actively engaging with government agencies, customs authorities, and industry partners, YANTIAN streamlined supporting services and clearance procedures. With strong coordination across all port stakeholders, it ensured that the vessel's berthing and operations were completed seamlessly and efficiently.
· A Global Hub Port
Strategically positioned with natural deep-water advantages, YANTIAN leverages advanced equipment and high operational efficiency to ensure stable vessel calls and smooth cargo flows to markets worldwide.Today, YANTIAN offers over 100 weekly sailings connecting to global destinations, with an average of 10 daily services to Europe and North America. Leveraging its dense network of long-haul services and close collaboration with shipping companies, government agencies, and port supervisory authorities, YANTIAN delivers dense, extensive, fast, high-quality shipping solutions.
YANTIAN's Green Development Report Card: Shore Power Supply Reaches New Heights
· National Leader in Shore Power Capacity
As the world-class hub port in the Greater Bay Area, YANTIAN remains committed to advancing green port development.
📊YANTIAN is the largest single container terminal in China in terms of shore power capacity and berth coverage, accounting for around 25% of the nation's total shore power supply.
🏆It is the world's only terminal to have won the Best Green Container Terminal award four times.
📉Between 2014 and 2024, YANTIAN achieved "growth without added carbon," increasing annual throughput by 25% while reducing carbon emissions per TEU by 32%;
♻️Building on last year's doubling of vessel connections and shore power supply, YANTIAN set new records again in the first half of 2025, with both metrics rising by over 20% year-on-year.
⚡During its call at YANTIAN, the “COSCO Shipping Yangpu” was fully powered by shore power, meeting all its onboard energy needs with clean energy.
· Upgrading Green Corridors with Multimodal Solutions
YANTIAN now has 20 inland ports, 33 rail-sea services, 15 port alliances, and 17 feeder shuttles, covering the Greater Bay Area, Southwest, and Central China. Domestically, they seamlessly connect with the national railway network and other major domestic ports; globally, they align with YANTIAN's dense, extensive, fast, high-quality shipping solutions, supporting the stability and resilience of industrial and supply chains in China and around the world.
· Shenzhen-Hong Kong Collaboration: Connecting Inland and Overseas for Shared Growth
Kwai Tsing Port primarily serves Asian and South American markets, boasting the largest number of Intra-Asia (120+) and South America (15) services in South China, while YANTIAN focuses on Europe and the US, with 4 vessels heading for Europe and 6 vessels heading for the US every day.
Building on its rail-sea and feeder networks, YANTIAN continues to advance green and efficient logistics corridors. Following a nearly 30% increase in laden barge volumes between YANTIAN and Kwai Tsing Port last year, volumes have continued to rise this year, setting new records. The Kwai Tsing–YANTIAN collaboration will further leverage the complementary strengths of both ports. Meanwhile, YANTIAN is accelerating the development of dedicated rail-sea corridors such as the "Chengdu–Shenzhen–Hong Kong" and "Chongqing–Shenzhen–Hong Kong" scheduled services. By seamlessly linking rail services directly to the port and connecting efficiently with feeder shuttles to Hong Kong, YANTIAN is strengthening domestic and international connectivity. This enables inland regions, YANTIAN in Shenzhen, and Kwai Tsing in Hong Kong to share in mutual benefits, advancing the marine economy and supporting the high-quality development of China's international trade.
YANTIAN remains committed to working closely with all partners to enhance connectivity across domestic and international markets, building a world-class international shipping hub. This effort supports Shenzhen's goal of becoming a logistics centre with global influence, contributes to China's high-quality international trade development, and helps stabilise and strengthen global industrial and supply chains.
