The China Seafarers and Construction Workers’ Union Visits YANTIAN: Model Workers and Craftsmen Chart a New Course for Growth

On June 26, 2025, the National Leading Labour and Skills Competition under the theme “Building a World-Class Port” concluded with a summary and review session in Dameisha, Shenzhen. The event was held alongside the “Model Workers Supporting Enterprises” initiative and the 2025 Directors’ Meeting of the Port Liaison Committee under the China Seafarers and Construction Workers’ Union. This important event was hosted by the Trade Union of YANTIAN.

01 Guidance and Exchange

Li Qingzhong, Director of the China Seafarers and Construction Workers’ Union, and Wang Jianlan, Director of the Seafarers Affairs Department, led a delegation of port union representatives on the visit. Lawrence Shum, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports YANTIAN, briefed the guests on the company’s three-decade journey in its pursuit of building a green, smart, and world-class port.

Wang Dongchuan, Director of the YANTIAN Trade Union, shared the union’s distinctive initiatives and achievements with the visiting delegation, highlighting efforts in safeguarding employee rights, advancing corporate development, cultivating skilled talent, organizing labour and skills competitions, and fostering a vibrant workplace culture. 

02 Model Workers Supporting Enterprises

The “Model Workers Supporting Enterprises” initiative, organized by the China Seafarers and Construction Workers’ Union, was held at YICT Building. Dr. Hu Yanhua, a port safety expert from the Tianjin Research Institute for Water Transport Engineering under the Ministry of Transport, delivered a specialized lecture to over seventy safety management personnel from YANTIAN and its contractors. Dr. Hu shared in-depth insights on the significance and implementation of the dual prevention mechanism, as well as the criteria for identifying major accident hazards in the handling of dangerous goods at ports. The session saw active participation, with attendees engaging enthusiastically in discussions with Dr. Hu.

03 Recognition and Expectations

Li Qingzhong expressed that YANTIAN’s achievements are inspiring, noting that its development journey serves as a vivid reflection of China’s reform and opening-up. He spoke highly of YANTIAN as a model of Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation.

He also commended the efforts of the YANTIAN Trade Union and expressed his gratitude to the management team, led by Lawrence Shum, for their strong support of the union’s work.

He encouraged the union to continue promoting the spirit of model workers and the spirit of craftsmanship, uniting and guiding employees to stay dedicated to their roles, enhance their skills, and contribute to the company’s high-quality development.
